Press Release – UAE Economy Records 4.5% Growth in Non-Oil Sectors, with Real GDP Expanding by 3.8%

The UAE has recorded significant growth in its real GDP by 3.8%, reaching AED 1.322 trillion in the first nine months of 2024, compared to the same period in 2023. Meanwhile, non-oil GDP expanded by 4.5% to AED 987 billion, accounting for 74.6% of total real GDP, while oil-related activities accounted for 25.4%.

Commenting on this performance, H.E. Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy, emphasized that the UAE’s sustained economic growth is a testament to the success of its policies and strategies aimed at enhancing economic diversification, streamlining business operations, and driving the expansion of new economy sectors as key drivers of sustainable economic and social development. He highlighted that, under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, the UAE has built an agile and globally competitive economic model capable of adapting to global challenges and rapid changes.

“The UAE continues to increase the contribution of non-oil sectors to the national economy by developing flexible economic legislation, enhancing global trade openness, and building strategic partnerships with key international markets. These efforts align with the “We the UAE 2031” vision, which aims to grow the UAE’s GDP to AED 3 trillion within the next decade and secure its position as a global economic hub,” H.E. bin Touq added.

Hanan Ahli, Managing Director of the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre, stated: “The UAE’s GDP growth over the past nine months reflects our strong economic performance and future-driven vision focused on sustainable economic expansion, led by non-oil sectors.”

“Economic diversification remains a key pillar of the UAE national strategy, ensuring long-term growth in the economy and in key economic and development indicators,” she emphasized.

Top-Growing Economic Sectors

During the first nine months of 2024, the UAE’s fastest-growing economic sectors showcased remarkable expansion compared to the same period in 2023. The transport and storage sector experienced a significant growth of 7.9%, largely driven by a surge in passenger traffic at UAE airports, which welcomed over 103 million travelers, marking a 20% increase. Similarly, the construction and building sector expanded by 7.4%, fueled by substantial investments in large-scale urban infrastructure projects. The financial and insurance sector also saw steady growth, rising by 6.8%, while government activities expanded by 5.0%. Additionally, the hospitality and restaurant sector recorded a 4.9% increase, reflecting the continued momentum in the tourism industry.

When examining the key contributors to non-oil GDP, trade emerged as the largest sector, accounting for 16.5% of total non-oil economic output. Following closely behind, manufacturing contributed 15.1%, underscoring the UAE’s industrial strength. The financial and insurance sector played a crucial role, making up 12.1% of non-oil GDP, while construction and building activities contributed 11.7%, and the real estate accounted for 7.6%.

Overall, the UAE’s nominal GDP reached AED 1.486 trillion during the first nine months of 2024, reflecting an impressive 6% year-on-year growth. The nominal non-oil GDP also grew significantly, reaching AED 1.136 trillion, with a 6.6% increase. Notably, non-oil sectors contributed 76.5% to the total GDP, further highlighting the UAE’s progress in economic diversification and sustainable growth.

The World Governments Summit 2025 kicked off with a high-level ministerial roundtable on the future of Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Under the theme “Envisioning 2045: Inclusive Pathways to Sustainable Development,” the session brought together an esteemed group of global and national leaders to discuss long-term strategies rooted in innovation and advanced technology to drive the global development agenda. Participants reaffirmed their commitment to a forward-thinking approach centered on strategic foresight and proactive planning, ensuring a more inclusive and sustainable future by 2045.

The meeting was convened in response to unprecedented global challenges, emphasizing the need for enhanced international cooperation and actionable steps aligned with global dialogues. The discussions highlighted the importance of knowledge exchange between ministers and government leaders to establish a unified and ambitious agenda for post-2030 development.

Chaired by H.E. Abdulla Nasser Lootah, Deputy Minister of Cabinet Affairs for Competitiveness & Knowledge Exchange, Chairman of the National Committee on SDGs and Vice-Chair of the Global Councils on SDGs, the meeting welcomed ministers from India, Canada, Uzbekistan, Brunei Darussalam, Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, Kosovo, Seychelles, Madagascar, Malta, South Africa, Mongolia, Latvia, and others, International organizations such as the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and UNICEF were also in attendance. Notable UAE leaders included H.E. Hessa Buhumaid, Director General, Community Development Authority, Dubai, H.E Abdulla Al Saleh, Under Secretary of the Ministry of Economy, H.E. Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, President of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and UN Climate Change High-Level Champion, H.E Mohammed Saeed Al Nuaimi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, H.E. Dr Shaikha Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of the Abudhabi Environment Agency, H.E Omar Al Suwaidi, Director of the Executive Office and Sustainability Directorate in ANOC, H.E Dr Amer Sharif, CEO of the Dubai Academic Health Corporation, Dr. Manal Taryam, CEO of Noor Dubai Foundation and Mohammad Al Shamsi, Chief Officer Climate Change and Sustainability at the Dubai Electricity, and other national leaders in the UAE.

Discussions were guided by the United Nations’ SDG Progress Report, which underscored the urgency of overcoming existing obstacles and crafting a global vision that extends beyond 2030. Key areas of focus included climate change, technological equity, and demographic shifts all of which demand long-term, strategic solutions.

In his opening remarks, H.E. Abdulla Nasser Lootah, Deputy Minister of Cabinet Affairs for Competitiveness & Knowledge Exchange, Chairman of the National Committee on SDGs and Vice-Chair of the Global Councils on SDGs stated: “Under the visionary leadership of the UAE, the National Committee on SDGs has launched the Ministerial Roundtable Platform introducing ‘XDGs 2045’ at the World Governments Summit. This initiative is not just a continuation of past development agendas, it is a bold leap towards a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable future.”

He further emphasized: “What was sufficient yesterday will not be enough for tomorrow. The future we aspire to cannot be built through individual efforts alone but through collective collaboration within effective participatory frameworks. Together, we lay the foundation for a global movement where development is fair, and opportunities are accessible to all without exception.”

H.E. Belfor Fabio García Henao, Minister of Information and Communication Technologies (MICT), Colombia, stated: “Artificial intelligence and big data possess immense potential as catalysts for eradicating poverty, advancing sustainable education, and ensuring universal energy access is provided. They are harnessed to serve humanity and drive transformative change, rather than becoming tools that exacerbate economic and social disparities.

H.E. Mukhtar Babayev, representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Climate Issues and Climate Envoy stated: “Confronting the climate crisis requires partnerships. At COP29 we found fair and shared solutions to finance sustainable development, and we proved that countries could agree and the multilateral process could deliver. We are proud to continue working alongside the UAE on these global priorities because we believe that together we are more than the sum of our parts.”

H.E. Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, President of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and UN Climate Change High-Level Champion, said: “Our responsibility to protect nature is not just an optional consideration in our global development journey; it is a fundamental pillar for ensuring our continued progress and success for the climate, our well-being, and the health of our planet.”

H.E. Francesco La Camera, Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) added: “As we approach 2030, it is clear we are not on track to achieve SDG7—millions still lack access to clean energy. Urgent action, stronger cooperation, and systemic solutions are needed to drive progress. IRENA remains committed to shaping a sustainable energy future for all.”

The roundtable concluded with a call from H.E. Hessa Buhumaid, Director General of the Community Development Authority in Dubai, urging the international community to continue joint efforts while emphasizing the importance of integrating all segments of society in shaping future policies and ensuring that progress pathways are equitable for all. During the Ministerial Roundtable, the launch of the global XDGs 2045 Global Survey was announced as an interactive tool designed to ensure that the next development agenda is built on a collective vision that reflects the aspirations and voices of people from diverse continents and cultural backgrounds.

The UAE Government has launched the third cohort of the Global Councils on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of the 12th World Government Summit 2025, held in Dubai from February 11 to 13. The launch took place during a high-level ministerial roundtable chaired by H.E. Ohood Bint Khalfan Al Roumi, Minister of State for Government Development and the Future and Chair of the Global Councils on Sustainable Development Goals, with the participation of H.E. Abdulla Nasser Lootah, Deputy Minister of Cabinet Affairs for Competitiveness and Knowledge Exchange and Vice Chair of the Global Councils on SDGs, along with the 18 Council Chairs from 17 countries and 17 Vice Chairs from the UAE.

H.E. Ohood Al Roumi emphasized that, under the guidance of the UAE’s leadership, the UAE continues to enhance efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by focusing on readiness and practical opportunities to double qualitative achievements and empower governments to drive sustainable development.

Since its inception in 2018 through the World Governments Summit platform, the ongoing work of the Global Councils on SDGs reflects the UAE’s commitment to accelerating international cooperation for achieving development goals. It also supports efforts to ensure a more sustainable future for future generations by sharing expertise, fostering partnerships, focusing on implementation and impact, and uniting efforts to build a sustainable future.

H.E. Abdulla Nasser Lootah stated: “Under the directives of the UAE’s leadership, the National Committee on Sustainable Development Goals is launching the third cohort of the Global Councils on SDGs through the World Governments Summit platform. This initiative provides a comprehensive system for forecasting the future of sustainable development efforts. It serves as a strategic step to enhance constructive international cooperation and add a new qualitative dimension to national efforts by expanding knowledge partnerships with partner countries in the Government Experience Exchange Programme. The councils act as a global bridge connecting the UAE with decision-makers and thought leaders in sustainability, working together to accelerate global efforts and develop mechanisms that enhance the achievement of SDGs beyond 2030.”

The National Committee on Sustainable Development Goals has launched the third edition of the Global Councils, adopting a more inclusive and pioneering model that brings together decision-makers and thought leaders from 17 partner governments worldwide. These governments are strategically partnered with the UAE through the Government Experience Exchange Programme, covering areas such as government research and development, investment, energy, environment, agriculture, advanced technology, and green and blue economies. The initiative aims to accelerate SDG implementation, address key global issues, highlight international priorities, and strengthen the development agenda through the SDGs in Action Forum at the World Governments Summit. It also fosters experience exchange and best practices in sustainability to promote international collaboration and drive progress towards the 2030 Agenda and beyond.

Leadership of the Global Councils on SDGs (2025-2026)

H.E. Ohood Bint Khalfan Al Roumi will chair the Global Councils from 2025 to 2026, with H.E. Abdulla Nasser Lootah serving as Vice Chair. Each council will operate as an independent working group, comprising a Chair, a Vice Chair, and council members.

Press Release – “SDGs in Action” Forum in Its 9th Edition as Part of the World Governments Summit 2025

The UAE’s National Committee on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) organized the ninth edition of the “SDGs in Action” Forum as part of the World Governments Summit 2025, held in Dubai from February 11–13. The forum brought together heads of state, ministers, UN officials, representatives of prestigious international organizations, and a distinguished group of thought leaders and policymakers under the theme “Shaping Future Governments.”

Under the theme “Envisioning Development Goals 2045: Inclusive Pathways to Sustainable Development,” the forum spotlighted six key pillars aligned with the UN’s SDGs: health, gender equality, economic growth, marine life, climate action, and global partnerships. Through a series of panel discussions, the forum displayed leading national and global models for driving innovative solutions to accelerate SDG implementation. Key topics included ensuring resilient and inclusive societies, deploying innovative strategies to enhance universal health coverage, empowering women through gender equality initiatives, advancing inclusive economic growth to create sustainable job opportunities, fostering pathways towards a sustainable blue economy, and strengthening global partnerships to achieve the post-2030 development agenda.

The forum also addressed pressing global challenges by presenting transformative and innovative solutions to accelerate sustainable development. It convened global leaders, ministers, policymakers, executives, and experts across diverse sectors. Distinguished participants included H.E. Wavel Ramkalawan, President of the Republic of Seychelles; H.E. Bui Thanh Son, Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam; H.E. Devika Vidot, Minister of Investment, Entrepreneurship and Industry of Seychelles; H.E. Rex Gatchalian, Secretary of Department of Social Welfare and Development of the Philippines; H.E. H.E. Wavel Ramkalawan, President of Seychelles, emphasized the significance of global cooperation in achieving sustainable development, stating: “We live in a world facing escalating challenges where no country can work alone. Our shared future depends on fostering productive collaborations and transformative innovations that drive fundamental solutions towards achieving sustainable development goals. At the ‘SDGs in Action’ Forum, we are not just discussing change—we are leading it and making it happen together.”

During her keynote session on “Protecting Oceans and Marine Life: Pathways to a Sustainable Blue Economy,” H.E. Dr. Amna Al Dahak underscored the forum’s role as a global platform for dialogue and collaboration. She highlighted the importance of innovative solutions for a more sustainable future, particularly in promoting a sustainable blue economy and leveraging advanced technologies for ocean conservation.

H.E. Al Dahak added “The forum provides policymakers with an opportunity to reinforce global commitments to protecting marine biodiversity and strengthening climate resilience. The decisions we make today will shape the future of our oceans by 2030 and lay the foundation for a sustainable and thriving marine economy extending beyond 2045.”

H.E. Dr. Maitha bint Salem Al Shamsi, Minister of State, emphasized the UAE’s commitment to global impact, stating: “Under the visionary leadership of the UAE and inspired by Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, the UAE continues its journey toward cross-border influence. Today, we call on the world to work together for a more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient future.”

In a session on “Driving Change: UAE’s Commitment to Women’s Empowerment and Inclusion,” H.E. Noura bint Mohammed Al Kaabi highlighted the nation’s dedication to gender balance, stating: “Under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, the country has placed significant emphasis on empowering women and supporting related initiatives. Women’s empowerment is a fundamental pillar of the UAE’s vision for national development, positioning them as key contributors to the nation’s future and societal advancement.”

She further expressed appreciation for the role of “Mother of the Nation,” Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, in championing women’s empowerment, stating: “We extend our deep gratitude to Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak for her pivotal role in supporting women as essential partners in the UAE’s comprehensive development.”

Her Excellency Al Kaabi also highlighted the prominent roles women hold across the UAE’s political, executive, and legislative sectors. The country ranked 7th globally and 1st regionally in the 2024 Gender Inequality Index (GII) issued by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), reaffirming the UAE’s leadership in fostering gender balance and accelerating progress toward sustainable development goals.

He further stated: “Since its inception in 2016, the ‘SDGs in Action’ Forum has served as a strategic annual platform for global leaders, policymakers, and UN officials to activate multilateral partnerships and develop proactive, innovative solutions to accelerate comprehensive development beyond 2030.”

The “SDGs in Action” Forum, as part of the 12th edition of the World Governments Summit, will feature a diverse agenda of national and global sessions and dialogues. Key highlights include the annual meeting of the UAE National Committee on SDGs chaired by H.E. Abdulla Nasser Lootah, bringing together key national stakeholders to unify efforts in preparation for the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development at the United Nations in New York.

The forum also hosted the third edition of the XDGs 2045 Ministerial Roundtable, a high-level global network dedicated to shaping the post-2030 development trajectory. Additionally, The third edition of the Global Councils on SDGs—an international, multidisciplinary network of government decision-makers—will also convene to advance the sustainable development agenda.

The UAE’s National Committee on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) convened its first meeting of 2025 on the sidelines of the “SDGs in Action” Forum, under the theme “Envisioning Development Goals 2045: Inclusive Pathways to Sustainable Development ” as part of the World Governments Summit. The meeting reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to reinforcing its leadership in achieving the SDGs nationally and globally. It served as a strategic platform to review the latest updates on national efforts, discuss the action plan for the current year, and foster strategic partnerships that accelerate progress and drive sustainable development toward a brighter future.

During the meeting, the committee’s General Secretariat presented the agenda for the “SDGs in Action” Forum 2025, held as part of the World Governments Summit, highlighting its role as a leading global platform for exchanging insights, experiences, and best international practices. Additionally, the roadmap for the committee’s 2025 activities was discussed, featuring a series of key events and international engagements aimed at strengthening coordination between national and international entities and ensuring the effective implementation of initiatives and projects that contribute to sustainable development.

In this context, His Excellency Abdulla Nasser Lootah, Assistant Minister of Cabinet Affairs for Competitiveness and Experience Exchange and Chair of the UAE’s National Committee on SDGs, emphasized the committee’s pivotal role in steering national efforts towards achieving the 2030 global agenda, stating: “The UAE does not merely participate—it leads change through ambitious visions, innovative policies, and strategic partnerships that create real impact. This approach strengthens the UAE’s position as a global leader in sustainability. We move forward with national and international cooperation as a fundamental pillar in ensuring a sustainable future for nations and societies.”

He added: “The committee’s 2025 action plan is a commitment to fostering a dynamic collaboration environment, integrating national efforts within a global network of influential partnerships to amplify collective impact. This approach accelerates development and ensures a sustainable global impact—not only for our country but for the world at large.”

The UAE’s National Committee on SDGs comprises a distinguished group of national entities playing a key role in implementing policies that support the UN’s goals. Members include the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Health and Prevention, the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, and the Ministry of Community Empowerment.

It is worth noting that the UAE’s National Committee on SDGs was established to implement the 2030 SDGs, align the UAE’s priorities with global objectives, and exchange expertise with partners locally and internationally. This effort aims to expand the network of active participants in executing the United Nations’ SDG agenda.

Press Release – International Experts Discuss the Role of Data in Developing Statistics and Supporting Policymaking

The Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre (FCSC), in partnership with the United Nations’ “Data Science Leaders Network,” organized an international seminar titled “Harnessing Data Science Mechanisms towards Economic Statistics Development” in Dubai. The event was attended by officials from the United Nations, as well as experts and specialists in big data from Equatorial Guinea, Georgia, Malawi, Mozambique, Peru, Rwanda, and other countries.

The international seminar highlighted the vital role of data and statistics in guiding effective policies and decision-making. It discussed key practices related to the use of big data and artificial intelligence mechanisms that will support significant economic opportunities by providing accurate and highly reliable information. This aims to achieve future insights that contribute to improving wellbeing and promoting prosperity for the UAE and the world.

The seminar included inspirational sessions covering topics such as “The Global Charter for the Future and the Digital Transformation of Economic Statistics” and “The Journey of Artificial Intelligence in the UAE: From Data to Insights.” It also discussed the pivotal role of big data in supporting national statistical systems across various countries.

Hanan Ahli: Effective partnerships are the first steps in activating the UAE’s membership in the UN Statistical Commission

Her Excellency Hanan Mansour Ahli, Managing Director of the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre, emphasized that the seminar is part of the centre’s initiatives to translate the UAE government’s directions for investing in the latest technology and data sciences. This aims to vitalize the national statistical system to achieve tangible progress in producing unified and high-quality data that positively impacts the national economy and enhances its competitiveness.

Ahli added that organizing the international seminar in partnership with UN committees represents the first steps towards activating the UAE’s membership in the United Nations Statistical Commission for the period 2025-2028. It presents a distinct opportunity to enhance global statistical dialogue, working together towards innovative statistical solutions and integrating national and global efforts to make data-driven decisions, address global challenges, and support sustainable economic development.

Mohammed Hassan: A pioneering step towards exploring new horizons in the world of data

His Excellency Mohammed Hassan, Executive Director of the Statistics and Data Sciences Sector at FCSC, stated that hosting the United Nations’ “Data Science Leaders Network” in the UAE represents a pioneering step towards exploring new horizons in the field of data and its alternative sources. This enhances the efficiency of statistical operations to produce accurate and comprehensive official data within the framework of the Unified UAE Numbers project, supporting decision-making, policy formulation, and strategic planning.

Stefan Schweinfest: A strategic platform encompassing shared visions for developing statistical methodologies

Stefan Schweinfest, Director of the UN Statistics Division, praised the efforts of the FCSC in hosting the international seminar ” Harnessing Data Science Mechanisms towards Economic Statistics Development.” He stated, “This seminar is not just a gathering of experts and specialists but a strategic platform encompassing shared global visions.” It supports the agenda of upcoming meetings of the United Nations Statistical Commission in New York, focusing on developing statistical methodologies related to digital economy and economic statistics, highlighting their importance in the prosperity of societies and improving individuals’ wellbeing.

It’s worth noting that the Data Science Leaders Network was established under the management of the United Nations Expert Group on Big Data and Data Science for Official Statistics (UN-CEBD) to enhance continuous statistical efforts and develop guidelines for integrating AI mechanisms and data science within national and international statistical offices. This supports strengthening statistical systems, improving their efficiency, and ensuring the production of accurate and high-quality data and statistics.

Press Release – Officials and Chief Sustainability Officers Shape the Future of Global Development Goals for 2045 During the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week

Ministers overseeing environmental, energy, and sustainability portfolios from over 10 countries, along with 30 chief sustainability officers from leading global companies, convened to envision the future of international efforts to achieve the 2045 Global Development Goals. Discussions centered on shaping the future of the clean energy sector and enhancing it through advanced technology and artificial intelligence.

This took place during a session titled “XDGS 2045: A Quantum Leap toward Inclusive Global Energy” organised by the UAE’s National Committee on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) 2025. The event, held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, runs from January 12 to 18.

Leadership Perspectives

His Excellency Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, emphasised: “Focusing on shaping and developing the clean and renewable energy sector using advanced technology and artificial intelligence is a critical step toward envisioning the future of sustainable development. Our wise leadership believes in the power of innovation and technology to drive transformative change toward achieving sustainable development goals.”

He added: “We are committed to providing practical, implementable solutions that support the sustainable development agenda beyond 2030, aiming for 2045. I invite everyone to work together and think innovatively to enhance people’s wellbeing, protect our planet, and ensure a sustainable future for upcoming generations.”

His Excellency Abdulla Nasser Lootah, Deputy Minister of Cabinet Affairs for Competitiveness and Experience Exchange and Chair of the National Committee on Sustainable Development Goals, who moderated the session, underscored the importance of expanding global dialogue to enhance international partnerships in designing future sustainable development pathways. He stated: “Accelerating the achievement of sustainable development goals requires strengthening cooperation and fostering a proactive understanding across various fields. The renewable and clean energy sector is a cornerstone of sustainability and a driver of wellbeing improvements for future generations.”

He also noted that the session’s outcomes will form a central part of the third report on Sustainable Development Goals 2045, set to be launched at the United Nations High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) 2025. This report will issue an open invitation to the international community to design the new global development agenda and the SDGs for 2045.

Dr. Nawal Al Hosany, Permanent Representative of the UAE to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), stated in her opening remarks: “The UAE reaffirms its unwavering commitment to supporting the transition to a sustainable and inclusive energy future by leveraging innovation and advanced technology to ensure clean and renewable energy for all. Global Participation

The session saw the participation of 30 ministers and chief sustainability officers from leading global companies, including: Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin, UN Special Envoy on Financing the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda; Lorenzo Tacchella, Private Partnerships Manager – GCC countries at World Food Programme; Ibrahim Al-Zu’bi, Chief Sustainability & ESG Officer at ADNOC Group; Sarah Shaw, Director of the National Corporate Social Responsibility Fund – Majra.

The session also saw the participation of prominent global companies and international organisations such as ADNOC, IKEA, DP World, First Abu Dhabi Bank, the United Nations, and the World Food Programme.

The Future of Clean and Renewable Energy by 2045

The session focused on the future of energy within Goal 7 of the SGDs on “Affordable and Clean Energy”. Discussions revolved around envisioning the future of clean energy, the role of artificial intelligence, and the integration of clean energy into the future energy mix. Participants explored innovative technologies for renewable energy production and emphasised the need to enhance investments in renewable energy projects, contributing to transformative positive changes in the clean energy sector.

They also examined strategies for building and expanding global partnerships to support clean energy initiatives, including solar, wind, tidal energy, and green hydrogen.

Vision for 2045

The concept of Sustainable Development Goals 2045 reflects a global consensus on the importance of developing a new framework building on the outcomes of the 2030 Agenda. This initiative supports efforts to ensure global prosperity and inclusive development. The idea emerged during the SDGs in Action Forum at the World Governments Summit 2023, aiming to chart the post-2030 future.

The session built on the outcomes of the Sustainable Development Goals 2045 Report, launched by the National Committee on SDGs during the HLPF on Sustainable Development held in New York in July of 2024. The report provides a comprehensive roadmap and serves as a foundation for a new global agenda toward a sustainable future for all.

The Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2025 represents a global initiative launched by the UAE over 15 years ago to accelerate the achievement of sustainable development goals. Hosted by Masdar, the leading energy company, the event carries the theme: “The Nexus of Next. Supercharging Sustainable Progress.” It aims to accelerate sustainable development efforts, drive economic, social, and environmental progress, and foster dialogue among decision-makers, business leaders, and the community to chart pathways toward a sustainable economy and inclusive growth.

UAE participates in UN High-Level Political Forum from 8 to 17 July

The U.A.E. will participate with a large government delegation in the work of the "High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development", organized by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs at its headquarters in New York from July 8 to 17. The forum, which is being held this year under the theme "Promoting the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Eradicating Poverty in Times of Multiple Crises: Effectively Implementing Sustainable, Resilient and Innovative Solutions", with the participation and attendance of more than 1,000 delegates and delegates from various governments of the world and international organizations, aims to promote sustainable development, follow up global efforts in this regard, anticipate current and emerging challenges and innovate solutions to them, by exchanging knowledge on the best experiences and expertise, coordinating and evaluating policies and supporting global efforts to accelerate the achievement of the goals Sustainable development for the good of societies. Proactive meeting of the National Committee for Sustainable Development Goals The National Committee for Sustainable Development Goals preceded the participation of the UAE government delegation in the work of the United Nations High-Level Political Forum, with a preparatory meeting for the members of the Committee, before the delegation’s departure to New York, during which it discussed the agenda and agenda of the UAE’s participation in the forum, reviewed the UAE’s performance in the reports of indicators of sustainable development goals, and the data that has been provided and improved, as well as a number of files related to the work of the Committee. UAE Private Sector ‘is An Engine of Change’ Critical to SDGs – UN Bodies

The private sector “is an engine of change and sustainable development” and has a critical role to play in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) according to business leaders speaking at a workshop organized by the General Secretariat of the National Committee on Sustainable Development Goals and the UN Global Compact in the UAE.

The workshop took place on recently, ahead of the United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, which takes place in New York on 8-17 July under the theme "Reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crisis: the effective delivery of sustainable, resilient and innovative solutions”.

There, business leaders will present the ideas discussed during the Dubai workshop, which aimed to highlight the role of the private sector in achieving SDGs 1 (No Poverty), 2 (Zero Hunger), 13 (Climate Action), 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) and 17 (Partnerships for Goals). Executives from more than 80 companies attended the workshop to share best practices, exchange knowledge and provide solutions and recommendations to support SDGs.

His Excellency Abdullah Nasser Lootah, Chairman of the National Committee on Sustainable Development Goals, said: “The UAE’s decision to extend the Year of Sustainability to include 2024 reflects the leadership’s commitment to promoting sustainable practices within society, which directly supports national efforts in achieving SDGs. Achieving SDGs can only come from collective effort, so strengthening partnerships between the public and private sectors is vital to a more sustainable and prosperous future”.

Eng. Waleed Salman, Chairman of the Board of the UN Global Compact Network in the UAE, commented: “Our shared commitment to SDGs underscores how important it is to engage and consult the private sector, which is a key driver of transformative change, especially through innovation. In this sense, companies in the UAE are uniquely positioned to lead the way, demonstrating how sustainable business practices can drive global progress and contribute to a brighter future for all”.

Other attendees to the workshop included Anita Lebiar, Head of the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia at the United Nations Global Compact. Bérangère Boëll, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in the United Arab Emirates, Omar Khan, Head of the Centre for Business Studies and Research at the Dubai Chamber of Commerce, and Mark Esposito, Professor of Public Policy at Mohammed Bin Rashid School of Government and faculty affiliate at Harvard Center for International Development at Harvard Kennedy School.

Participants attended a roundtable discussing the results of a survey in which local businesses were asked about their experiences in adopting SDGs, including their challenges, successful initiatives and best practices.

UAE advances 3 places, ranking 7th globally in 2024 World Competitiveness Report

DUBAI, 18th June, 2024 His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, stated that the UAE, under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and through the dedicated efforts of its people, continues to improve its standing each year, achieving higher ranks across various global competitiveness indicators.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid said, "In one of the most important global competitiveness reports issued by the International Institute for Management Development in Switzerland, the UAE moved up three places, reaching seventh place globally. The UAE is also among the top ten globally in more than 90 key and sub-indicators in the 2024 World Competitiveness Report."

His Highness said, "Our thanks and appreciation go to all the teams in the government, economic, and development sectors who work with one spirit to achieve a single goal: the progress of the United Arab Emirates."

Building on last year’s achievement of entering the top 10, the UAE made a notable leap in the 2024 World Competitiveness report, advancing three positions to 7th place worldwide, ahead of Norway, Iceland, Japan, Canada and Finland.

The UAE performed exceptionally across various pillars of the report, ranking 2nd globally in Economic Performance, 4th in Government Efficiency, 10th in Business Efficiency.

Mohammad bin Abdullah Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs, stated, "The UAE’s continuous presence at the forefront of this significant report reflects its status as one of the world’s most competitive economies. The exceptional vision and wise leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, have made the UAE a pioneering developmental model adaptable to ongoing global changes. Commenting on the results, Hanan Mansour Ahli, Managing Director of the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre, praised the integration and governance of real-time data and statistics exchange between federal and local entities. Ahli said, "This achievement is due to dedicated teams committed to implementing the vision and directives of the government of the future, reinforcing the UAE’s leadership. These results reflect the solid principles of the competitiveness culture in the UAE.”

Top Rankings in Key Indicators

The World Competitiveness Report classifies the countries based on four main pillars and 20 sub-pillars encompassing 336 competitive indicators across various economic, administrative, and social fields, including government efficiency, education, and innovation. In this year’s report, the UAE advanced in all four main pillars.

The UAE ranked among the top 10 globally in over 90 key and sub-indicators. The UAE ranked 1st globally in 11 indicators including industrial disputes, labour force (%), employment (%), and household consumption expenditure- real growth.

The UAE secured 2nd place globally in 9 indicators, including tourism receipts, females in parliament, labour force growth, adaptably of government policy, and absence of bureaucracy.

The UAE ranked 3rd globally in 6 indicators including collected capital and property taxes, immigration laws, management of cities and percentage of government budget surplus.

The UAE also achieved 4th place in 12 indicators including consumer price inflation, long-term unemployment, international experience, overall productivity (ppp), labour regulation, and the balance of commercial services and employment in the public sector.

The UAE also achieved 5th place in 13 indicators including GDP (PPP) per capita, quality of air transportation, energy infrastructure, graduates in sciences, start-up procedures, unemployment legislation, foreign highly-skilled personnel, national culture, unemployment rate and tax evasion.

First published in 1989, the IMD World Competitiveness report is a comprehensive annual report and a global benchmark on the competitiveness of countries.

It offers insights into trends, benchmarking, and a wealth of statistics and survey data derived from extensive research. The report analyses and ranks countries based on their ability to manage competencies for sustainable long-term value creation.

UAE Leads Regionally, Sole Arab Country Among Top 20 Globally in Human Development Index Report

The United Arab Emirates ranked first regionally in the 2023/2024 Human Development Index report issued by the United Nations Development Programme, advancing nine places in the global ranking from the previous report, to rank 17th globally out of 193 countries covered in the report, ahead of countries such as Canada, the United States, and Japan, thereby attaining a prestigious status and becoming the only Arab country among the top 20 globally.

His Excellency Abdulla Nasser Lootah, Deputy Minister of Cabinet Affairs for Competitiveness and Knowledge Exchange, said, "Under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of UAE, and the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the UAE government is walking with firm and ceaseless steps towards serving humanity, happiness, and welfare."

He added, "The UAE has proven its leadership at the regional level and its global excellence in the field of human development, thanks to successful policies aimed at achieving prosperity in education, health, economy, living standards, and quality of life, and to ensure sustainable development in all areas to guarantee a promising and sustainable future for future generations."

Her Excellency Hanan Mansour Ahli, Director of the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre (FCSC), said, "The UAE aspires to be among the best performing countries in global competitiveness reports, as competitiveness has a human and societal dimension focusing on human welfare. Under the wise leadership’s directions, we are working to establish the foundations of decent life in the country to ensure the welfare of its society."

Ahli added, "The UAE’s achievement of ranking 17th globally in the report to be among the leading countries in the field of human development is due to the combined efforts of federal and local entities in the health, education, and economic sectors, where it has topped the first place regionally over several years, advancing globally this year by nine places compared to last year. We are all continuing in the competitiveness race to achieve honourable performance for our country."

According to the report titled "Reimagining Cooperation in a Polarized World" this year, the UAE’s score reached 0.937, advancing from last year by 0.026 points, while Switzerland, which ranked first globally, scored 0.967. The UAE’s score in the life expectancy at birth indicator reached 79.2 years, contributing to the third goal of the Sustainable Development Goals (Good Health and Well-being), adopted by the United Nations member states for the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. The UAE’s score in the Expected Years of Schooling indicator was 17.2 years, while the Mean Years of Schooling was 12.8 years, reflecting on the fourth goal (Quality Education), while the Gross National Income per capita was 74.104 US dollars.

It is worth mentioning that the Human Development Report is issued annually by the United Nations Development Programme since 1990, and it is a composite index that reflects the well-being of peoples in the world through three dimensions (health, knowledge, and living standards), represented in four indicators: life expectancy at birth, expected years of schooling, mean years of schooling, and per capita gross national income.

The UAE Participates in the 55th Session of the United Nations Statistical Commission

The UAE delegation has recently participated in the meetings of the 55th session of the United Nations Statistical Commission, held in New York City. This event stands as the largest international gathering of statistics and data science experts globally, drawing the heads and directors of statistical entities and data centres from various countries. The assembly also saw participation from academics, experts, and consultants in UN bodies and international organisations.

The UAE delegation included leaders from the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre (FCSC), and local statistics centres including the Statistics Centre – Abu Dhabi (SCAD); Digital Dubai represented by Dubai Data and Statistics Establishment (DDSE); the Department of Statistics and Community Development (DSCD) in Sharjah; Ajman Statistics justify; Ras Al Khaimah Statistics justify (RAKSC); and the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security.

During its participation in the meetings, the delegation announced its adoption of the United Nations Statistical Commission’s decision proposal to initiate the World Population and Housing Census Programme for the year 2030. The statistical community in the country will commence work on implementing the proposal, positioning the UAE as the first in the world to incorporate this update into its international-level statistical agenda.

The delegation participated in meeting sessions and workshops, surrounding specialised activities and sessions addressing fundamental principles of official statistics, data science, open data, governance statistics, climate change statistics, integration of statistical and geospatial information, the International Comparison Program (ICP), services statistics, statistics related to aging, disaggregated data by age, demographic statistics, human development, and health statistics. Additionally, the agenda covered data and indicators related to the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Plan.

The delegation emphasised that the practices and digital environment in the UAE have enhanced readiness and led to significant advancements in census implementation. This progress included the utilisation of artificial intelligence tools for data collection and processing, facilitated by effective partnerships between the government and private sectors. These collaborations extend to analysing spatial data for censuses and linking them to essential services for the population, thereby enhancing overall well-being.

The UAE delegation engaged in discussions with officials from various international organisations, including the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). They discussed the means of exploring opportunities for collaborative efforts to enhance the measurement of foreign direct investment, aligning with the latest practices and key private standards in data collection and calculation methodologies.

The delegation also met with representatives from statistical offices in various countries, including Statistics Sweden, Statistics Austria, the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies in France, Stats New Zealand, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, the Statistics Bureau of Japan, and the Korean Statistical Information Service. The meetings aimed to exchange statistical experiences and explore opportunities for enhancing cooperation, particularly in the context of updating the United Nations big data platform for the Sustainable Development Goals. Notably, the UAE is among the four countries worldwide selected as regional headquarters for the platform.

Her Excellency Hanan Mansour Ahli, Head of the UAE delegation and Director of the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre, emphasised the importance of strengthening international collaboration with organisations and partners in the fields of statistics and data science. She highlighted the need for concerted international efforts to leverage big data for the betterment of societies.

Additionally, she highlighted the importance of formulating initiatives to enhance government policies and fostering innovative partnerships between the government and private sectors. These collaborations aim to achieve the strategic goals set by the wise leadership of the UAE, enhance the well-being of communities, and underscore the necessity of working as a global community to unify efforts and design effective solutions for a better tomorrow for humanity.
